He tells us that one day he was walking through the quiet streets of Seville when, for no apparent reason, he decided to enter the San Jerónimo neighborhood. There were some merchants who were full of joy, everyone sang and there was a wonderful atmosphere. When he was about to leave the fair, a young man arrived, he asked him to please give him the photo of his beloved. Bécquer agreed and the boy recognized the portrait of the young woman immediately, told him that it was Amparo, a maiden who lived with them and that she was an orphan, that no one knew the whereabouts of her parents. Without further ado, the protagonist left Seville and returned 10 years later. When he returned, everything had changed a lot, but the essence of the city was maintained and he remembered that happy fair, so he decided to return. To her surprise, the joy of that time no longer reigned and through a merchant she found out that some men had taken Amparo from Seville after fighting a lot because she was the daughter of a very wealthy family.
