The story begins with a prologue in which a mysterious woman using the name Edith Breakspeare, moves to the Breton village of Quilaix and rents a room with her young son. As the story unfolds, we find that her husband, Eric Marville, was accused of murder, convicted and is in a prison nearby. There is an ancient ring with Runic symbols that she guards and which is stolen by a masked man moments before her husband, escaped from the prison, shows up. The story forwards over 20 years as the now-grown son Idris sets out to clear his father's name. As he does so, he meets and falls in love with Lorelie Riviere. Without revealing the intricate plot, it involves castle intrigue, duplicity, numerous murders, ancient history, treasure, boat wrecks, stage plays and psychic phenomenon.
